Marketing Tips by Joe Gracia

Q. Can you enlighten me what a Unique Marketing Proposition (USP) is?

A. Marketing expert, Joe Gracia, responds:

Your USP (Unique Selling Proposition) is a marketing term used by the big companies to describe what sets them apart from their competition.

One company’s USP might be that they are fast — like Fedex promising fast, overnight delivery.

Another company’s USP might be low cost, like K-Mart or the Dollar Store.

Another company’s USP might be hip and trendy and appealing to young people.

And another’s could be high quality and expensive, like Tiffany or Rolls Royce.

You can’t be all things to all people and succeed. You have to choose which benefit you can provide to your customers better than your competitors. It’s all about defining exactly what you want to be and who you want to sell to. Once you do that, you will have your Unique Selling Proposition.

Above all, try to be the very best that you can be. Provide an excellent product or service that lots of people want and treat your customers very well.
